This painting depicts a local legend known as “The Cruelty of the Bull.” It later became synonymous with Zaan heritage. A bull attacked a pregnant women’s husband who was gored. The pregnant wife came out to her husbands help but got gored in such a way it induced labor, see the infant in the lower left? The wife and husbaNd died as well leaving the newborn still alive, a Zaandam legend. Unfortunately the child died a year later.
