I started with the Delta Midi also.
It's a great little turner.
Re Ashtrays - I find it much easier to drill/router the rest holes prior to turning.

Didn’t think about that. I mark centers once I’m done turning it. Lock a 1” pipe between head and tail stocks with sticky sand paper and sand them in. Works ok.
