Thought you didn’t have to use the filter. Just have to control your cadence while smoking with the larger opening?

You don't have to, but I find the draw to be far too open without something in there.

Designed to control how much moisture comes through the smoke. Very popular in European pipe smokers. Some people just toss the filters as they say it affects the flavor of the smoke.

It's popular in Europe apparently. It can cool and mellow out the smoke. The charcoal filters can remove some of the tar and moisture.
